Safety Tips for Skiers

Practical guidelines and rules for safe skiing — on the slopes and in the mountains.

Skiing on the slope

Ski slopes are a safe environment — but only if the rules are respected. MZSS recommends every skier to know and apply the following safety rules, for themselves and for others.

10 Rules for safe skiing
  • 1Respect others — do not ski in a way that endangers other slope users.
  • 2Control your speed — adapt your speed to your level and slope conditions.
  • 3Choose your direction — the skier coming from above is responsible for not endangering skiers ahead.
  • 4Overtaking — overtake with sufficient distance and space for the skier in front.
  • 5Entering a slope — before entering a slope or continuing after a stop, check that it is clear.
  • 6Do not stop on a narrow section — if stopping, move to the side where you do not obstruct others.
  • 7Moving uphill — if walking uphill, keep to the edge of the slope.
  • 8Respect signs — follow all markings, barriers and nets placed on the slopes.
  • 9Help in an accident — every participant is obliged to stop and assist in an accident.
  • 10Identification — after an accident, every participant must leave their contact information.
Additional tips
  • Wear a helmet — mandatory, regardless of skiing level.
  • Choose a slope suited to your level: green → blue → red → black.
  • Check your equipment before every ski session (bindings, edges, poles).
  • Watch weather conditions — in fog, ice or snow, reduce speed.
  • Do not ski under the influence of alcohol or medication.
  • Be visible — wear bright colours, especially in poor visibility.
In case of an accident — immediately secure the location (place skis in a cross above the accident site) and call the rescuers at 078 533 331. Do not move the injured person unless in immediate danger.
